In this month’s installment on the Fruits of the Holy Spirit series, we will discuss gentleness. I chose this fruit because it is August and we honor the Immaculate Heart of Mary who is our sweet and gentle mother, who is the reflection of her beloved Son’s gentle nature.
Gentleness in its nature is tender, soft, and mild-mannered. As a fruit of the Spirit, it is more than that. It involves having a humble heart, being kind, polite and restrained in our behavior toward others. Those who are gentle are humble and thankful toward God, having a peaceful mind and submitting wholly to His plan. As Jesus shows us in His life, gentleness is to submit one’s strength in a posture of meekness and to accept God’s will in each situation even when it is difficult.
It is not easy to stay consistently gentle, especially when we are confronted with rude people or unjust situations. Our nature is to fight or flight. This is why gentleness, like all the other fruits, is a gift from God that is cultivated with the tool of Trust. We must trust in the Spirit’s ability to transform us, especially when we fail and when we do, we simply repent, make a resolve, and move on. It is also important to understand that meekness is not weakness. Gentleness does not exclude righteous anger. There are times when will have to overcome evil and injustice.
Here are some bible verses to contemplate that will help us a better understand what and how we are to apply gentleness as a fruit of the Spirit in our lives.
